Carter Cavity Expansion Solution for a Frictional, Non-Cohesive Soil

Posted by Dr. Dawn Shuttle, Editor of the Draft Compaction Grouting Consensus Guide of the Geo-Institute of the ASCE.

The spreadsheet, carter.xls, provides the Carter et al. (1986) large strain analytical solution for cylindrical and spherical cavity expansion in a non-cohesive frictional soil.  The cylindrical solution provides a simple method for approximating the volume-pressure response during compaction grouting.  Required inputs are friction angle, dilation angle, elastic shear modulus, Poisson’s ratio (typically assumed in the range 0.15-0.3), and in situ horizontal stress.
